The language is derived from Sanskrit and belongs to the southern group of Dravidian languages. It is also known as Andhra-Bhasha as it was used as a lingua franca in the Andhra region which comprises of Telangana, Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra. However, the official name for the language is Telugu as it's the official language of Andhra Pradesh. In addition to being spoken by those from Andhra region, Telugu is also a part of a large family known as Central-Dravidian languages which includes Tamil Tamil and Kannada amongst others. However, Telugu was possibly the first language to be influenced by Dravidian languages and Sanskrit. The language has a historical background and evolved over the course of thousand years and consists of both Sanskrit and Dravidian roots. Telugu, like many other languages, is also influenced by Sanskrit. It's one of the few languages in the world which has words which are derived from Sanskrit words along with their form or meaning changed. It has a very rich history and over 2000 years old. The first book ever written in Telugu was "Kandimandala" which was written by Sri Madhurakavi, who was born between 804-818 AD. He is also attributed as the first translator to Telugu and sang "the first ever Telugu Harikatha" (storyteller). The book contained a poem called "Mohana Rasa". In fact, the book contains the very first mention of Telugu language in history. In addition to being spoken in India, Telugu is also spoken in many countries such as India, Fiji, Philippines and Kenya. It is also spoken by Indian migrants in Malaysia and Singapore. Therefore, it is one of the widely spoken official languages in the world. The total number of speakers for Telugu worldwide has not been determined but there are around 60 million native speakers throughout India. However, there are some people who speak it as a second language while others use it for trade purposes with other countries outside of India.
